Every spring, we get the same rush of phone calls. The sky turns that weird greenish-gray, the wind picks up, and suddenly everyone in town remembers they’ve been meaning to get their roof checked “one of these days.” Sound familiar?

Here at Le Ciel Roofers, we’ve climbed enough ladders after enough storms to know one thing for sure: the roofs that hold up best aren’t the newest or the most expensive ones. They’re the ones somebody actually paid attention to before the storm hit.

So before the next round of severe weather rolls through, grab a coffee and let’s walk through what actually matters.

Start With What You Can See From the Ground

You don’t need to get up on a ladder to catch the early warning signs. Walk around your house and look up. You’re checking for:

• Shingles that are curling at the edges or look like they’re lifting up
• Bald spots where granules have worn away (they’ll show up as darker patches)
• Sagging anywhere along the roofline — that’s never a good sign
• Moss or dark streaking, which usually means moisture has been sitting somewhere it shouldn’t

If something looks off, don’t wait. A small lifted shingle today is a leak waiting for the right gust of wind.

Clear Your Gutters Like You Mean It

We know, we know — nobody wakes up excited to clean gutters. But clogged gutters are one of the biggest reasons roofs fail during heavy rain. When water can’t drain properly, it backs up under your shingles and finds its way into places you really don’t want it: your attic, your walls, your ceiling.

Give them a real clean-out at least twice a year, and definitely before storm season kicks in. While you’re at it, check that your downspouts are actually directing water away from your foundation, not just dumping it right next to the house.

Trim Back Anything That Could Come Down on Your House

That big oak branch hanging over your roof might look nice in July. It looks a lot less nice snapped in half on top of your shingles during a windstorm. Trim back any branches that hang over the roofline, and if you’ve got a tree that’s clearly dying or leaning toward the house, it’s worth calling an arborist sooner rather than later.

Know What Your Attic Is Trying to Tell You

Your attic is basically an early warning system, and most people never look at it. Head up there with a flashlight after the next rain and check for:

• Water stains on the underside of the roof deck
• Damp insulation
• Any daylight coming through where it shouldn’t
• A musty smell that wasn’t there before

Catching a small leak in the attic is a lot cheaper than dealing with water damage in your living room ceiling six months later.

Get an Actual Inspection, Not a Guess

Here’s the honest truth: some damage just isn’t visible from the ground or even from your attic. Wind can lift shingles just enough to break the seal without anything looking obviously wrong. Hail can bruise shingles in a way that won’t leak today, but will absolutely leak next year.

That’s really the whole reason a professional inspection matters. We’re not up there trying to sell you a new roof — we’re up there checking seals, flashing around chimneys and vents, and the general condition of materials that have already taken a beating from the weather. Most of the time, we find small stuff that’s an easy fix. Every so often, we catch something that would’ve turned into a real problem if it sat through one more storm.

After the Storm Passes

If you do get hit with severe weather, resist the urge to climb up there yourself right away. Wet, storm-damaged roofs are one of the more dangerous places to be walking around. Take photos from the ground of anything obviously wrong — missing shingles, dented gutters, debris — and give us a call. At the end of the day, storm prep isn’t complicated. It’s mostly just paying attention before you have to, instead of after. If it’s been a while since anyone’s actually looked at your roof, now’s a good time — not after the next storm’s already in the forecast.
