You heard the wind howling last night. Maybe a branch came down in the yard, maybe the rain sounded like it was trying to get through the ceiling. Now the sun’s out and everything looks… fine? Here’s how to actually check what’s going on up there — and when it’s time to stop guessing and call someone who does this for a living.

Don’t Grab the Ladder Yet

Start from the ground. Walk around your house and look for shingle pieces or that gritty granule material sitting in your gutters or scattered across the lawn. Check your gutters and downspouts for dents — hail leaves marks there just like it does on cars. A pair of binoculars will show you more than you’d think, and you never have to leave solid ground to use them.

The Attic Tells the Real Story

Grab a flashlight and head up there. You’re looking for damp insulation, water stains on the underside of the roof deck, or — worse — actual daylight coming through where it shouldn’t. A musty smell is another clue that moisture’s gotten in somewhere. Attics don’t lie, even when the roof itself looks okay from the street.

What Wind Actually Does

Contrary to what most people picture, wind doesn’t usually rip the whole roof off. It loosens things. Shingles curl, crack, or lift at the edges just enough to let water sneak underneath on the next rain. It’s subtle. It’s also exactly the kind of damage that turns into a real leak three storms from now if nobody catches it.

What Rain and Hail Leave Behind

Rain finds every weak seam — especially around chimneys, skylights, and vents where flashing does the sealing. Hail, even the small stuff, bruises shingles and knocks granules loose. Your roof can look completely normal and still have lost years off its lifespan.
